Uist Gaelic Plan Community Fund

Small ideas can make a big difference to the future of Gaelic in Uist.

Supporting Local People

The Maoin Plana Gàidhlig Uibhist is a community fund supporting local people, groups and organisations to develop projects and initiatives that help protect, strengthen and grow Gaelic across Uist. 

The fund has been established as part of the Uist Gaelic and Community Plan, with support from Bòrd na Gàidhlig. A total of £30,000 has been awarded to support the delivery of the Plan, with £24,000 specifically allocated to the Community Fund. 

What is the fund for?

We want to support ideas that help make Gaelic a stronger and more visible part of everyday life in Uist.Projects can bring Gaelic into community activities, education, culture, heritage, workplaces and social life, creating opportunities for people to use the language, learn it, hear it and pass it on.

The fund puts resources directly into the hands of the Uist community, enabling local people to shape the future of Gaelic in ways that reflect their own communities and priorities.

 

Supported projects can:

  • increase opportunities to use Gaelic in everyday life
  • encourage intergenerational transmission
  • make Gaelic more visible and normal in communities
  • strengthen community identity and pride
  • support Gaelic speakers, learners and new speakers
  • widen participation in Gaelic activities
  • develop education, skills and confidence
  • support local cultural and heritage activity
  • generate wider social and economic benefits
  • encourage partnership and further investment in Gaelic

 

Who is it for?
The fund is open to community members, groups and organisations across Uist who have an idea or project that can contribute to the aims of the Uist Gaelic and Community Plan. You do not need to be a large organisation to make a difference
What could your idea achieve?
Whether your project creates more opportunities for children and young people to use Gaelic, brings Gaelic into a community activity, supports heritage and culture, develops skills, or simply creates more opportunities for people to speak the language together, we want to hear from you.

    Managing the Plan

    The Uist Gaelic Stakeholder Group will oversee Plana Gàidhlig Uibhist, meeting quarterly to review progress, update actions, and respond to new opportunities. This regular review will keep the plan active and relevant, allowing it to adapt as local circumstances change. The Group will also include a representative of the Gaelic Youth Forum, once established.

    https://gaidhliguibhist.scot/ will act as a central point for updates, practical tools, and examples of what’s working. It will also help individuals, groups, and organisations find ways to contribute or lead on particular actions. Social media and and regular updates on the Ceòlas FB site will help keep Plana Gàidhlig Uibhist visible and connected to the wider community.

    Local ambassadors will be appointed across the islands to encourage progress and to share progress on social media.

    The aim is steady, continuing and practical progress and not just a one-off campaign soon put aside. By involving individuals, communities, and working closely with local organisations and public bodies, we can create the conditions for Gaelic to be more present and more widely used in everyday life across Uist.
